Dear Club members,

Could someone in the know, please tell the real story about Cabelas cancelling the Pointing Dog Demostration next month? I have heard the tale about them not wanting us to do a Demonstration with live birds.  It must be true as it has been cancelled.  I guess I am a bit disappointed in either the club or Cabelas at this point.  Live birds would be the most important part of a pointing dog demonstration, a fact that I know to be true. Why  Cabelas woiuld be opposed to live birds is beyond me. Why is the club supporting any part of their deal? Just curious as I have my eye on a shotgun over there and may buy it at a hunting store instead.

Just some answers no personal shots please.

Dan,
First of all, Cabela's did not cancel the pointer demonstration, I did. Now, a little background.
Seeing we are no longer doing the Big Horn show, I thought that some other means of attracting new members for SBDA was a good idea, something that would benefit the club. I had previously approached Cabel's regarding a judges clinic that was put on earlier this year with very positive results. With this background I asked about SBDA putting on some sort of demonstrations at their facility in the hopes of attracting new members. They steered me to the right person and I got his approval to persue this. This was brought up at the June meeting of the SBDA and the dates of Aug 2nd and 3rd were approved. I contacted Cabela's and was given their approval for these dates. They asked that I have a plan of events for them 30 days prior to the approved dates for their advertising or whatever.
A few days before I was to meet with them the live bird issue surfaced. I asked if there were some alternate things that we could do in case Cabel's did not want us to have live birds. The retrievers said that it was no problem, we could use dummies or Dokken's or whatever. The only reply's that I received from the pointer people was that if they could not use live birds, they were not interested in doing anything. That is when I tried to contact you to see if you might have an alternative in case the live birds would not be acceptable.
During our meeting, live birds did surface and concerns about liability, bad publicity, health issues etc. were talked about. End result there were just too many things that could go wrong and Cabela's felt it was not worth having to deal with live birds. I told Cabela's what had been relayed to me as far as no live birds, the pointer people were not interested. They said that was fine so having no other choice I cancelled the event for the 3rd with the pointer group.
I approached them and consider us as being their guest. Therefore I only presented what I had been presented with (less the sarcasm) and did not attempt to argue our case. The decision was theirs to make. After which I asked if I could have a few more days to see if the pointer people could come up with some sort of demonstration without using live birds. This was granted and now past.
After talking with you about this over the phone which you indicated that you were not interested either if live birds were not to be used, you asked if I had any suggestions. I said that I thought that maybe some sort of pointer breed program could be put on i.e. showing the different pointer breeds and explaing about their particular attributes with some question and answer stuff like we use to do at the Big Horn show. You indicated at that time that you were not interested in that.
All that I can suggest at this point is that all the club members show up on the 2nd and support the retriever demonstrations. Make this a real positive event for SBDA and Cabela's in the hopes of creating a long and beneficial relationship. With thoughts of adding some sort of program for the pointer group in the future.

I would hope that the retrieving device of choice is a retrieving bumper. In fact you might want to go buy some of theirs and then have some of them setting out on a table with other dog training equipment that Cabela's sells.

Maybe a TV monitor with a tape of a pointing dog doing some work and then some representatives of different breeds there to show off how good they look. Couldn't you have a wing on a string/fishing rod and show off a pointer pup getting started????? I hope that this is just a communication problem here because somebody could sure miss out on a great opportunnity to show their dogs and recruit some new members. Sometimes ya just gotta take one for the team. Unless you don't want to be part of the team.

Doing the demo is a great idea. HPW
